The Life

A pupil of Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School, Frederic Edwin Church became the movement's most ambitious and celebrated painter. Inspired by the writings of the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, he journeyed to the Andes and the far north in search of the sublime, returning with vast panoramas that drew paying crowds when exhibited as single, theatrical spectacles. At his estate Olana, overlooking the Hudson, he built a Persian-inspired house that was itself a work of art.

The Hand

Church combined meticulous, almost scientific observation of geology, botany and atmosphere with a grand sense of theatre. His enormous canvases glow with luminist light — sunsets, mist and rainbows rendered in transparent glazes — drawing the eye through immense depths of space.

The Legacy

He gave nineteenth-century America its defining image of the continent as a place of divine grandeur, from Niagara to the tropics. His panoramas remain the high-water mark of American landscape painting and the aspirations of a young nation.

The Market

A cornerstone of American art history; his major landscapes are prized museum holdings, and his best works have long ranked among the most valuable American paintings of the nineteenth century.
