The Life
Born at Caprese and raised in Florence, Michelangelo Buonarroti was recognised as a prodigy in the Medici circle and carved the David and the Pietà before he was thirty. Reluctantly turning to paint, he covered the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in four gruelling years, and returned decades later for the Last Judgment. In old age he served as architect of St Peter's, and wrote poetry of anguished spiritual intensity — a titan in every art he touched.
