The Life

Edvard Munch's childhood in Norway was shadowed by death — his mother and beloved sister lost to tuberculosis — and grief, illness and anxiety became the wellspring of his art. In Berlin and Paris in the 1890s he conceived The Frieze of Life, a cycle on love, dread and mortality of which The Scream is the culminating cry. He suffered a breakdown in 1908, recovered, and lived on in Norway until 1944, bequeathing the vast body of his work to the city of Oslo.

The Hand

Munch dissolved academic finish in favour of raw, expressive colour, undulating lines and simplified, emotionally charged forms. A pioneering printmaker, he cut and lithographed his own motifs, and even left canvases exposed to the weather in his 'radical treatment' — pursuing feeling over polish at every turn.

The Legacy

He is the great forerunner of Expressionism, the artist who made inner anguish the true subject of painting. The Scream has passed beyond art into universal symbol — the very face of modern dread, as recognisable as any image ever made.

The Market

A pastel version of The Scream sold for US$119.9 million in 2012, then a world record for any work at auction — confirming Munch among the most valuable names in all of art.

Commission a Edvard Munch masterwork.

Museum-grade Edvard Munch reproductions, made to order. ArtzFolio ∞ Infinity recreates the masterworks of Edvard Munch (1863–1944), the Norwegian master of Expressionism, on archival, hand-finished canvas — numbered as strictly limited Heirloom editions and built to be inherited. Every commission reproduces that surface faithfully, at the size, frame and finish of your choosing, and ships across India with white-glove care.
