He was the dominant artist of his age and the teacher of a generation, Ingres foremost among them. His austere grandeur defined how revolution and empire alike wished to be seen, and shaped European painting for decades.

The Life

Jacques-Louis David rose to fame with severe, morally charged history paintings that captured the mood of France on the eve of revolution. An ardent revolutionary, he voted for the execution of Louis XVI and painted The Death of Marat as a secular icon of the cause. After the Terror he became First Painter to Napoleon, glorifying the Emperor in vast state canvases; with Napoleon's fall he went into exile in Brussels, where he died.

The Hand

David is the purest exponent of Neoclassicism: sculptural, clearly modelled figures, stage-like classical settings, and a polished, near-invisible finish that subordinates colour to line and moral clarity. Every gesture is composed for maximum gravity and rhetorical force.

The Legacy

He was the dominant artist of his age and the teacher of a generation, Ingres foremost among them. His austere grandeur defined how revolution and empire alike wished to be seen, and shaped European painting for decades.

The Market

A pillar of the Louvre and the world's great museums; his major works are effectively beyond the market, and any autograph painting or drawing to appear is treated as a museum-calibre event.
