The Life
Born in Kapadvanj, Gujarat, Tyeb Mehta witnessed the horrific communal violence of Partition-era Bombay, a trauma that haunted his art ever after. A member of the Progressive Artists' Group, he spent formative years in London and New York and later at Santiniketan, refining a spare, powerful figuration. From this came his signature motifs — the Diagonal, the falling figure, the trussed bull, and the fierce goddesses Kali and Mahisasura.

Mehta pared his canvases down to flat, taut planes of pure colour and a single slashing diagonal that fractures the picture and the figure alike. This economy — spare, tense and monumental — charges his images of suffering with an almost unbearable stillness and force.
